On 05 June 2020, 46th World Environment Day, Don Bosco Green Alliance, an international collective of young people from the Salesian Family institutions, who contribute to global environmental action, thought and policy, launched a new campaign `Rethink, Reconnect, Renew`. This campaign will be run throughout the ongoing Laudato S` Year.
Father Savio Silveira-Convener Don Bosco Green Alliance addressed a letter on the launch of the new campaign to the Alliance Members.
The text of his letter is reproduced below:
``I am happy to introduce you to a new campaign being launched by our alliance on World Environment Day 2020, as part of the Laudato Si Year, and I invite you to participate actively in the same. Rethink. Reconnect. Renew.
The Covid-19 Pandemic, which has thrown the world into turmoil, is challenging us to Rethink our priorities, our choices and our lifestyles. As Pope Francis said in his message to the world on 27 March 2020: ``We have gone ahead at breakneck speed, feeling powerful and able to do anything. Greedy for profit, we let ourselves get caught up in things, and lured away by haste. We were not shaken awake by wars or injustice across the world, nor did we listen to the cry of the poor or of our ailing planet. We carried on regardless, thinking we would stay healthy in a world that was sick``. The global pandemic we are all suffering has made us realize how wrong we were! It has made us realize that we need to urgently rethink the path our lives and our world need to take!
Precisely at this very challenging moment in history, we have entered into the Laudato Si Year (24 May 2020 to 24 May 2021), which has as its theme: `Everything is Connected`. Significantly, the theme for World Environment Day 2020 (5 June) is: `Time for Nature`. Clearly, it`s time to Reconnect, especially with nature. As the UN Environment Chief, Inger Andersen, said in a recent interview: ``We are intimately interconnected with nature, whether we like it or not. If we don`t take care of nature, we can`t take care of ourselves. And as we hurtle towards a population of ten billion people on this planet, we need to go into this future armed with nature as our strongest ally.``
Our rethinking and our reconnecting should inspire us to Renew our way of living, so as to ensure a healthier and happier future. As our Rector Major, Fr ngel Fernndez Artime, emphatically stated: ``I hope we will learn something from this pandemic. For example, will we go back to a hectic lifestyle or will we be able to have a more humane pace and spaces? Do we want to make up for the lost time in consumerism or will we learn that it is possible to live happily with the essentials? Will we continue unbridled in the race to contaminate the world or will we give the planet a respite? After this pandemic, an ecological indifference like the one we continue to see in the climatic summits is not possible.``
We are living in extraordinary times, which demand that we take extraordinary steps! I invite every institution and individual in the alliance to enthusiastically participate in this campaign. On our website, you will find a list of ideas, activities and programmes, which describe what can be concretely done during this year-long campaign.
Pope Francis has been consistently raising this question: ``What kind of a world do we want to leave for the children and the young people of today?`` To respond to that question, it`s time we Rethink, Reconnect, Renew!
